Digression No. 3- learning the language of being off-grid.

Please watch the clip above to gain a better understanding of the one-sided conversations that take up much of my time, EVERY day.

Shan has made me become familiar with words like “volts”, “amps”, “watts”, “inverter”, “charger”, and such and such “percentage”. Familiar, but truly, I have no idea what he is talking about. I have gained a better understanding of what button to push when I want to use the microwave or make a coffee when we are off-grid. I have been quietly and firmly admonished when I have forgotten to hit that button to turn it (what??) off again. “Churning through power” has become part of our lexicon, with me feeling a slight sense of shame, but without knowing why. Is it an accusation or just an observation? I’m pretty sure it’s the latter, as I have figured out that Shan needs a sounding-board, no matter how clueless that sounding-board is. Once he vocalises his concern, he usually figures out the solution with no input from me, but- even better- no blame towards me. I wasn’t the cause. This time. Phew.

    Rubber ducking!

    Hi Felicity,

Rubber ducking is the IT term for verbalising a problem to a colleague. Often once we’ve explained the problem, the solution is clear. The term came for a programmer who replaced his colleagues with a rubber duck on his desk. He’d verbalise programming problems to the duck and usually have a solution by the time he’d finished.

    Cheers,

    Greg.
    PS Happy trails!
